';cream mixture'; just means to blend everything together so there are no pieces of anything floating around. Before I had my mixer, I would do it by hand. It doesn't take very long by hand. I'd guess electric.
You can go either way. An electric mixer is very fast and if you cream by hand it can take you twice as long if nor longer and very tiring on your arms.
